The TRACE Method

AI can help you think about a project, but it is not a source and it cannot do the responsibility of evaluating evidence for you.

Target a question

Turn a broad topic into a focused, answerable question. Note your time period, place, population, and key terms.

Retrieve real sources

Use library catalogues, official publications, reputable databases, and original documents. Treat AI suggestions as search leads only.

Assess the evidence

Read the author, date, method, context, limitations, and conflicts of interest. Compare claims across sources.

Connect carefully

Organise verified notes into an argument. Mark the difference between a source’s claim, your interpretation, and an unanswered question.

Explain your process

Keep citations, notes, versions, and any required disclosure of AI use so another person can understand how you reached your conclusion.

Four Useful Research Workflows

Refine search terms

Ask for related terms, alternate spellings, and possible viewpoints, then search them in trustworthy databases yourself.

Prompt: “Suggest neutral search terms and possible counterarguments for this research question. Do not provide sources or make factual claims.”

Understand a method

Use AI for a plain-language explanation of a method you have already found in a reliable source. Compare it with the original.

Prompt: “Explain this quoted methods paragraph in plain language. Separate what the paragraph says from general background knowledge.”

Stress-test an outline

Ask what evidence an argument would need and where a reader might challenge it. Verify every suggested issue yourself.

Prompt: “Review this outline as a critical reader. Identify missing definitions, unsupported jumps, and evidence I should look for. Do not add facts.”

Check clarity before submission

Ask for questions about structure, transitions, and vague wording. Make the revisions yourself and retain your source trail.

Prompt: “Ask five questions that would help me make this draft’s reasoning clearer. Do not rewrite it or create citations.”

Open every source you plan to cite. Read enough to confirm that it supports the specific claim you make. If you cannot access or verify it, do not cite it. Follow your school, publisher, or research supervisor’s rules for disclosure and permitted AI use.

Protect research participants and partners: do not enter identifiable interviews, survey responses, confidential documents, unpublished data, or restricted materials into a tool unless you have explicit approval and an appropriate secure service.

Before You Share a Research Project

  • My question is focused and my key terms are defined.
  • I opened and assessed every source I cite.
  • I can distinguish evidence, interpretation, and uncertainty in my writing.
  • I verified quotations, figures, dates, calculations, and citations against the originals.
  • I kept private or restricted information out of public AI tools.
  • I followed the relevant approval, ethics, authorship, and AI disclosure rules.

Practice: Build a Claim-Evidence Table

  1. Choose one claim from a current project or a public article.
  2. Create four columns: claim, source, exact supporting evidence, and limitation or question.
  3. Find and open at least two reliable sources yourself.
  4. Use AI only to suggest questions that could challenge the claim.
  5. Revise the claim so it matches what the evidence actually supports.
